💻Required Hardware, Software and Accounts

Introduction

This document outlines required software for the ‘Supercharge your Marketing with AI’ workshop. Please install these softwares on your computer before starting the workshop unless instructed otherwise.

  • Please install the latest version of Windows or MacOS that your computer supports.

  • Follow the installation instructions to install Discord on your computer and sign up for ChatGPT.

1. Signup with ChatGPT

Go to https://chat.openai.com/ in your preferred browser. Enter your email address or use single sign-on via Google or Microsoft account.

Enter your email address if you would prefer to have a standalone OpenAI account or you can opt to use either your Google or Microsoft account for single sign-on (SSO). If you chose to enter your email address you will need to click Continue when you're done, otherwise simply follow the instructions for SSO.

That’s it! You've arrived at the main chat screen for ChatGPT. Signing up was the easy part, now you need to think about how you want to use ChatGPT!

2. Signup for Discord

Discord is a chat app, similar in some ways to Slack, though it was originally designed for gamers trying to coordinate tactics while playing multiplayer online games. There is a reason that Midjourney uses Discord—even if it seems a little convoluted from the outside.

Before you can even use Midjourney, you need to sign up for a Discord account. It's free, so head to Discord's site and register a new account if you don't already have one.

Join our course-specific Discord channel here: https://discord.com/invite/2drAa9UfcG

3. Signup for Midjourney

Once you've got a Discord account, head to the Midjourney website, and click Join the Beta. This will open an invite to join the Midjourney Discord channel. Click Accept Invite, and you're in.

Note: You might have already heard but in late March 2023, Midjourney suspended free trials due to people abusing the system.

Now, you will need to subscribe to a Midjourney plan. Head to any one of the newcomer rooms. There are multiple, do not worry, you can just join the most recent one you see. They are named like #newbies-14, #newbies-44, #newbies-74 etc.

Type /subscribe in the message field, and hit enter or return. This is what's called a slash command, and it's how you interact with Discord bots like Midjourney. You're just telling Midjourney that you want to subscribe to their service. This is not the usual way we subscribe to say a streaming platform or purchase a product online but you will get used to the idea soon!

A link that prompts you to sign up for a paid Midjourney plan will open up. For the purpose of this course, you will only need the ‘Basic Plan’ which costs USD$10/month. We recommend the monthly billing option as it doesn’t tie you down to a bigger annual bill, just in case you find that Midjourney is not suitable for you or your business. If you find that you enjoy and found using Midjourney helpful, you can always upgrade your plan or change your billing preferences after the course.

Once you've signed up, you should see the confirmation below. Head back to Discord. You’re ready for the course!

Note: If you want to maximise the 1-month Midjourney access you’ve paid for, we recommend you completing this subscription step on the day just before the course starts, 28 July ‘23 (Friday). Otherwise, feel free to subscribe early and tinker around on your own as well!

To confirm that you have subscribed to Midjourney successfully, head to any of the newbie chat rooms in the Midjourney channel and type in /info into the message bar and hit send. You should see a message from the Bot confirming your subscription.
